Who: Mateo Broillet is a typographer interested in the expression of typography and its impact in the collective imagination.

When: After completing his bachelor’s in visual communication at ECAL, Lausanne, Broillet obtained a master’s in design from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam in 2018. In 2017 his work was included in the Graphic Design Festival Scotland and the Design Fair at the Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles.

Where: Working now as an idependent designer, Mateo Broillet counts the Sandberg Instituut among his clients. He gained his professional experience at Bold Decisions, Amsterdam, Onlab Studio, Berlin, Studio Joost Grootens, Amsterdam, and LargeNetwork, Geneva.

What: Sabir Mono, an open-source monotype font designed for coders, and Preciado, a variable web font for paywalls and clickbait titles, are two projects reflecting Broillet’s commitment to the articulation of typography within specific contexts.

The online magazine It’s Nice That singled out Broillet’s work for the studio The Rodina, for which he created Nero Condensed; for the Sonic Acts festival, Amsterdam; and the Harvard Graduate School, Boston, for which he devised Ward.

Why: His current research focuses on fonts developed and used for science fiction since the Second World War, and how that spirit of the genre is nowadays embedded in these fonts.
