Who: With his sharp drawing skills, Geneva-based illustrator Christoffer Ellegaard confronts our everyday technology loaded urban society.

When: After completing a bachelor’s in visual communication at HEAD, Geneva, Ellegaard obtained his master’s from HSLU, Lucerne in 2015. In 2018 he received the Lissignol-Chevalier and Galland bursaries in the applied arts category.

Where: His hand-drawn project Smart Cities was exhibited in 2018 at the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva. His work was shown in 2017 at the graphic novel festival Fumetto, Lucerne, and at Halle Nord, Geneva. Ellegaard published his first children’s book Tout en ordre with the French publisher Les fourmis rouges in 2018.

What: His Smart Cities series investigates our technological future with a mixture of fascination and irony. His drawings, inspired by references in architecture, sociology and science fiction, expands on the trend of solving problems through technology. Automation and mass management become the means by which humanity populates the world.

Through skilful storytelling, Christoffer Ellegaard reflects on the contradictions and hypocrisies inherent in the “smart world” ideology.

Why: His latest work, Smart Cities, displays our urban future with lucidity, adeptly blending architectural drawing and graphic novel.
