Who: The design studio Filipe & Viricel, created by Micael Filipe and Romain Viricel, developed the new Midi chair.

When: Micael Filipe graduated in industrial design from ECAL, Lausanne in 2013. He worked as a project assistant at Big Game, Lausanne until 2015. He is now a project assistant at Jasper Morrison in London.

Where: Romain Viricel opened his studio in Lyon in 2017 after having worked as a project assistant at Jörg Boner productdesign. Viricel, who holds an MA in fine arts from ESAAA, Annecy, obtained his bachelor’s in industrial design from ECAL, Lausanne, in 2013.

What: The versatile Midi chair, which is made from plastic and supplied in four different warm colours — clay, cardboard, anthracite and warm grey — revisits the indoor chair for the café and the kitchen, or outdoor for the Sunday lunch in the garden. Although highly functional and contemporary in its production and design, it radiates a cosy and traditional feeling.

The development of the in- and outdoor Midi chair by Filipe & Viricel is supported by the IKEA Foundation Switzerland and the Fondation Casino Barrière Montreux.

Why: “The Midi chair is not an icon but a worker for the ordinary. Its familiar shape makes it calm but not bland. It’s a chair that simply fits in to its environment.” (Filipe/Viricel)
