Who:
Daniel Zamarbide pursues his research in architecture, stage and exhibition design under the name of BUREAU, based in Geneva and Lisbon.

When:
Daniel Zamarbide obtained his master’s in architecture at the Institut d’Architecture de l’Université de Genève (IAUG). During his studies he attended the workshops of Christian Marclay, Philippe Parreno and Catherine Quéloz at the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Geneva. He was one of the founding members of group8, an architectural collective that has acquired national and international recognition. Since 2003 he has been teaching as an assistant at EPFL and professor (2000−2014) at HEAD, Geneva. In 2014, he joined the team of Dieter Dietz’s ALICE Laboratory at EPFL as a visiting professor and co-director of the year one programme.

Where:
With Bureau A, Daniel Zamarbide started to collaborate with architect Leopold Banchini in 2012. They have explored the possibilities of architecture in a wide variety of formats in the fields of art, garden and landscape architecture, exhibition design, temporary architecture and object making. With their installation Shelter, the duo recently won the Frame Award for the best bar of the year. The Club, a commission for the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale, was shown in the exhibition Night Fever at the Vitra Design Museum. In 2017, Leopold Banchini and Daniel Zamarbide have decided to go “solo” and Zamarbide started his own BUREAU.

What:
Zamarbide presents a series of designs for stage and exhibitions he has made since 2015: the exhibition design for the research project Beyond the Monument, Geneva, the transformation of the Centre culturel suisse in Paris to host a performance festival in 2015, and the design of the SWISSNEX stand for the San Francisco edition 2016.

Zamarbide develops his research around Oskar Schlemmer’s Triadic Ballet, reflecting on the function of architecture in modern art history.

Why:
BUREAU shows a strong understanding of the performative nature of the architectural activity.
